There is an ancient Greek proverb that states “a society becomes great when old men plant trees who’s shade they know they shall never sit in.” This, in essence, is the work of The Grammar School Board of Trustees. Although hopefully with a bit more gender equality.
While there is always work to be done that pertains to the current academic year, trustees, using TGS’ mission statement and core values as a guide, are entrusted with making sure that the school stays true to these proclamations of purpose. We are not a board of directors but of trustees. It is the head of school’s job to “direct” the day-to-day operation with his staff and faculty. Trustees hold the school’s future “in trust”.
Our board of trustees consists of a considerable pool of talent and commitment. Returning members include: Kimona Alin, Ray Hutchins, Mark Long, Sarah Messenger, Marjorie Ray, and Reggie Rockefeller. We will also be welcoming new members Peter Howe (former TGS Parent and long time supporter), Marcia Leader (a TGS community member for many years most recently as the former school nurse and Director of Admissions and Financial Aid), and Wendy Brennan (teacher at Vermont Academy and current TGS parent of three).
With this new TGS Board of Trustees section of the school’s website you will be able to see our mission statement, core values, upcoming meeting times and locations, agendas and notes from previous meetings. It is our hope that this page, in conjunction with regular Wednesday Notice updates, will keep everyone informed and help generate input and feedback.
There is a lot of excitement and energy among board members who are enthusiastic about the job ahead. We are all looking forward to working with Steve, the staff, faculty, students, parents and friends to help make our 50th year our best ever and ensure the next 50 are even better.
